Selenium is a natural remedy which delays oxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids and maintains tissue elasticity. Selenium is an ingredient in secretion of prostaglandins, which assist in blood flow. They also work with vitamin E to improve fertility, healthy growth and functions of certain cells in creating energy. Selenium also supports the immune system and improves the natural defenses of the body. Having a deficiency of selenium may induce Hashimoto’s.

Hashimoto’s in conjunction with selenium deficiency is linked to severe gastrointestinal complications.  Selenium deficiency may be caused by disorders of an inflamed bowel and celiac disease.

Selenium is important in controlling the amount of hydrogen peroxide in the body, preventing an autoimmune response. Hydrogen peroxide damages cells if left to accumulate to high levels. Selenium forms selenoproteins to safeguard the body from the damage due to hydrogen peroxide, and conversion of T4 into active T3.

Recommended Selenium Dosage

It is recommended that you take 200 mcg to assist in lessening the number of thyroid antibodies by half in six months. Supplements: Probiotics

Gluten also induces intestinal permeability. Studies show that discontinuing gluten intake can treat autoimmune responses.

How to Administer Probiotics

Always ensure you get the dosage right. Start with a low dose and then progressively increase the dose. Consult the local GP to test what is best suited for you. Probiotics are available in several forms but it is advised you take them in supplement form if possible.

The best probiotics in the market are MegaSporeBiotic, VSL#3, Pure Encapsulations, Probiotic 50B, and Klaire Labs Ther biotic among others.

Note that Probiotic 50B, VSL#3, and Klaire Ther-Biotic all must be refrigerated and used at room temperature so that bacteria remain feasible for a period of two weeks.

Benefits of Taking Probiotics

The main benefit of probiotics is that they help in digestion and extraction of nutrients from ingested food thus sustaining the immune system. Also, they do help in relieving some of the gut symptoms including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), which is more evident in a majority of Hashimoto’s patients( more than 50%), and can also cause leaky gut. Low dose naltrexone or LDN is a prescription drug which can also be used on off label treatment to treat autoimmune diseases.

LDN is best used with patients affected with a leaky gut and the dose is adjusted for best results. Treatment should begin with a low dose while progressively increasing it to find the required results. Such treatment can be best achieved under the watchful eye of a compounding pharmacist.

How Naltrexone Works

Naltrexone stabilizes the immune system by increasing T-regulatory cytokines and adjusting TGF-B, curbing Th12 which facilitates autoimmunity.
